Hi, my name is Allison. I have struggled with mental illnesses for over 40 years. Is it only recently that I have come to understand that keeping these a secret kept me in a much darker place. I was inspired by a friend who taught me by her example to be brave and talk about what I am facing when she said the words “my mental illness doesn’t define me, but it is part of how God made me … so what does He want me to do with this? Her openness about what she experienced helped me and I suppose this is what drives me to be real about mine.
My intention for this blog is to create a safe space for conversation - for people who struggle with mental illness and for those who accompany them. This blog is definitely not about me suggesting or recommending anything. I am barely an expert on my own life. I will never pretend that I have the answers for anyone else.
I believe our stories matter. Often, I have learned something about my own situation because of what someone revealed in sharing their own. They were able to name something that resonated with my life when I could not find the words to express them. It helped me to feel known.
I will post a reflection on a topic. My hope is that people will share their thoughts and experiences. You are welcome to comment on the original post or on what another person has posted. Please frame your comments so that they come from your experience and pertain to your life. It is not about you or me giving an opinion about what someone needs to do or not do. Each person's "share" is important and respected as being worthwhile - because it is to that person. It’s okay to have different perspectives. Take away what is meaningful to you.
I pray that the honesty and openness on my part and others will lead you to go deeper – whether it is to find a person to talk to or to use this format to share your story. I pray that God puts people in your path that will accompany you in the way you need. I pray that this site makes it safe for you and for me.
